2018's first
match saw Atletico Madrid beat Getafe 2-0 with style. But all the style
and drama came from their very own returning hero, Diego Costa who had a name
in everything from goal sheet, to bookings.
Getafe defenders didn't know what to do with Los Colchonero' forwards as they shone throughout the match with
signs of Griezmann & Costa connection. Correa scored the opener after good,
intricate from Griezmann but complacency crept in a few times in Atletico's defenders as Getafe exploited few gaps early on. But
all the talk will and shall finish on Costa, as following him must almost feel
like watching a movie. In the 57th minute he stole the ball instinctively from
the defender and almost finished in the 1-on-1 situation.
Four minutes
later he wrestled with the ball again, literally, elbowing Dakonam Djene on the
way. Referee pulled out cards for fun today as he showed 10 yellow cards with
one of them resulting into red.

On the 68th
minute, when Sime Vrsaljko slided the ball towards unmarked Costa, he placed it
brilliantly past the goalkeeper. If you have known about the Brazilian-born
striker for even this past year, you know if anything he is emotional. After
returning to La Liga three and a half years later, Costa went straight to fans
celebrating his return. This celebration saw him get into the booking for the second
time, which resulted in him being sent off. Every Atletico fan had the same expression as Costa after seeing red, and
you can't help but feel that the referee could have let it go.
Getafe then had a rejuvenated approach, having an extra man on the
pitch but Godin & co. saw the rest of the match through. There were many negatives
to take away from the match as referee lost control over the proceedings. Diego
Costa will also miss the next match against Lleida
in the second leg of the Copa del Rey clash. But he & the Frenchman already
seem to have that telepathic connection which Rojiblancos were hoping for.
